UPDATE: Ramon Castro
has been traded to the Chicago White Sox
for relief pitcher Lance Broadway
who will report to AAA Buffalo
Tonight's Post Game brought to you by Ice Road Truckers. An ancient struggle re-erupts on earth between two rival extraterrestrial trucking companies, Autobot Transit and Decepticon Freight, with a clue to the ultimate power held by a teenage truck driver. Season premiere Sunday night on the History Channel. Check your local listings.
Tonight's starting pitchers Mike Pelfrey
for the Mets
and the Marlins' Sean West
battled in an old fashioned pitchers' duel, but neither was around for the decision.Pelfrey was removed by Met manager Jerry Manuel in the 8th inning after he walked Marlin
LF Chris Coghlan
to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Bobby Parnell
jogged in from the bullpen and induced Dan Uggla
to ground out to second base to end the inning. West was pinch hit for in the bottom of the 7th. Both starters surrendered just one run.
The score remained tied at one until the bottom of the 11th. Brian Sanches
came on in relief for the Marlins, and promptly allowed a sharp single to left by leadoff hitter Gary Sheffield.
Sheffield stole 2nd and kept on running to third after the throw from substitute catcher Ronny Paulino
sailed into centerfield. With Sheffield on third, Fernando Tatis
was hit by a pitch bringing Omir Santos
to the plate. Earlier in the game Santos had homered for the Mets only run to this point. The fan favorite then further endeared himself with the faithful by singling past shortstop, driving in Sheffield to win the game.
The Mets are expected to activate catcher Brian Schneider
tomorrow, which may result in Santos being sent to the minor leagues. That scenario is tough to envision given all of Santos' dramatic hits during his brief Met tenure. Some other notes from the game:Luis Castillo's
streak of reaching base in 9 straight plate appearances ended when he grounded out to shortstop to end the 5th inning.Emilio Bonifacio
hit a fly ball to centerfield that on television replays appeared to have been trapped by CF Carlos Beltran,
but the umpire made a call of out and Beltran quickly threw to second base to double off Jeremy Hermida.
Apparently Carlos Beltran had a disagreement over the strike zone with noted Met antagonist umpire Angel Hernandez
in the bottom of the third inning, but my satellite television broadcast was disrupted by weather events so ask your friends. Please direct your complaints to DirecTV.
