New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathon Niese
(1-1) threw 107 pitches over 7 strong innings, giving up only 1 run on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 7, and the Mets offense took better advantage of cozy Citizens Bank Park than the home team did as the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-1 for their 8th consecutive victory.
Former Phillie Rod Barajas
is the Mets starting catcher so it was very interesting when he called every pitch of the game using multiple signs, whether any runners were on base or not. Perhaps this is an indication that he has some knowledge of Philadelphia stealing signs. Coincidentally or not, the Philly offense was largely impotent in this game accruing only 6 hits, all singles, while the Mets had 8 extra-base hits among their 10 total hits.
The Mets big guns fired the opening salvo in the top of the 2nd inning. Facing Kyle Kendrick
(0-1), Jason Bay
led off with a double. David Wright
followed with a homer over the 409 foot mark in center field. One out later Jeff Francoeur
homered to left and the Mets had a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning Philadelphia fired back, but their pellet gun didn't inflict much damage. Jayson Werth
led off with a single and 1 out later Juan Castro
singled Werth to 3rd base. Carlos Ruiz
singled to left driving in Werth and after 2 innings it was 3-1 Mets. The Mets added a single run in the 5th when Barajas hit a solo homer making it 4-1 Mets.
In the 7th inning things really got interesting. Phillie reliever Danys Baez
hit Francoeur with a pitch. Francoeur not only had homered earlier in the game but also had made multiple stellar defensive plays, including a nice dash to cut off a ball hit toward the right field corner by Werth, holding him to a single, and a catch as he smashed into the scoreboard embedded in the right field wall of a ball hit by Raul Ibanez
. Francoeur showed his displeasure by stealing 2nd base, his 1st steal of the season. Barajas followed with an RBI double. Then Baez walked the pitcher Niese. Angel Pagan
followed with a 2-run triple to drive Baez from the game. 1 out later reliever David Herndon
gave up an RBI single to Jose Reyes
making it 8-1 Mets. Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia
got a measure of revenge for Francoeur by hitting Chase Utley
with a pitch in the bottom of the 8th.
The Mets added a tack-on run in the 9th when Barajas hit his 2nd homer of the game, this one off Brad Lidge
who was making his 1st appearance since coming off the disabled list.Box score
