Grim indeedGreat American pundit and everyman Homer Simpson once said, "I've learned that life is one crushing defeat after another until you just wish Flanders was dead."   Perhaps Homer was a Met fan.The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a 3 game sweep of the New York Mets this afternoon, scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning off of starter Mike Pelfrey on a pair of 2 run singles by Andy LaRoche and Jason Jaramillo on their way to an 11-6 victory.   The Mets tried to inch back, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st, but never tied or lead the game, and eventually the post-Nate McLouth era Pirate offense pulled away.McCutchen FeverAndrew McCutchen, the prospect recalled from the minor leagues by Pittsburgh to take over centerfield with the trade of Nate McLouth to the Atlanta Braves got things started quickly.   He singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and eventually scored the first of the Pirates 11 runs.   He finished the game with 3 runs scored on 2 hits and a walk.   Most of Pittsburgh's offense came at the expense of Pelfrey, who allowed 9 runs, 8 earned, in 3 2/3 innings pitched.   Pelfrey (4-2) took the loss.Pirate yellow apron?Whatever Pelfrey served up, the Pirates enjoyed it.   The 9 runs allowed were the most by Pelfrey this season, and the 3 2/3 innings pitched marked his shortest outing of the season.   The Pirates final 2 runs were allowed by J.J. Putz in the 7th inning. Before and after BeltranOne bright spot for the Mets was the return to the lineup of Carlos Beltran.   A severe stomach virus had kept Beltran off the field since he exited a game early on May 30th.   He reported some minor weight loss.   Beltran doubled and homered in his return.   David Wright and Fernando Martinez also had 2 hits each for the Mets.   Also encouraging was the work of reliever Sean Green who threw 2 scoreless innings without allowing a baserunner.Yummy woundsThe Mets lick their wounds and head to Washington, D.C. for a weekend 3 game series with the Nationals.   Ex-National Tim Redding opens the series on the mound for Mets, so team confidence must be high.Box score courtesy
