The New York Mets won the 2nd game of a twi-night doubleheader 10-5 over the Los Angeles Dodgers to take the sweep and to assure themselves of their 3rd consecutive series win after beginning the season by losing each of their 1st 4 series. This was the Mets 1st doubleheader sweep in 3 years, and their 1st doubleheader sweep over the Dodgers since 1971.
The Mets took the early lead. Dodgers starter Charlie Haeger
(0-3) walked Angel Pagan
leading off the bottom of the 1st inning. After a Luis Castillo
sacrifice bunt moved Pagan to 2nd base, Jose Reyes
singled to center driving him in. Jason Bay
followed with a triple to deep center scoring Reyes. It was Bay's 3rd triple of the season, he had 3 total in all of 2009. David Wright
walked for the 21st time this season then Ike Davis
hit a sacrifice fly to plate Bay and give the Mets a 3-0 lead after 1 inning.
Then Mets starter Oliver Perez
threw it all away. He walked Andre Ethier
leading off the 4th inning, then gave up a single to Rihanna's boyfriend
center fielder Matt Kemp
. Perez then uncorked a wild pitch sending the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Then Ronnie Belliard
hit a grounder to the shortstop Reyes. Kemp, perhaps thinking of what he might be doing later with Rihanna, foolishly attempted to advance to 3rd and was thrown out by Reyes for a fielder's choice as Ethier scored and Belliard was safe at 1st. After Blake DeWitt
popped out to shallow center Jamey Carroll
walked. Dodgers back up catcher A.J. Ellis
then singled to drive in Belliard, cutting the Mets lead to 1 run and bringing the pitcher Haeger to the plate. Perez walked Haeger to load the bases and Mets manager Jerry Manuel
had seen enough. He summoned reliever Hisanori Takahashi
(2-1) from the bullpen, removing Perez after he'd thrown only 75 pitches, with 2 outs in the 4th inning with a 3-2 lead and the bases loaded. Takahashi promptly walked Reed Johnson
to force in the tying run, then got James Loney
looking at a borderline pitch that was called strike 3 to end the inning. Loney objected to the call vociferously and was ejected from the game.
The Mets got the lead back for good in the 5th and David Wright reached a career milestone in the process. Pagan led off with a walk. Castillo also walked and that was the end of the night for Haeger. Ramon Troncoso
came on in relief. Reyes grounded into a fielder's choice with Castillo forced out at 2nd while Pagan advanced to 3rd. After Bay lined out, Wright hit an RBI single driving in Pagan. It was the 1,000th hit of Wright's career. Then Davis doubled in Reyes and Pagan giving the Mets a 6-3 lead.
The Mets blew it open in the 6th. Reliever Jon Link
entered and Henry Blanco
led off with a single and 1 out later Pagan singled moving Blanco to 3rd. Pagan stole 2nd and Castillo walked to load the bases. George Sherrill
then relieved Link. Reyes reached on shortstop Carroll's error as Blanco scored. One out later, Wright got his 1,001st career hit, a bases clearing triple which gave the Mets a 10-3 lead. The Dodgers tacked on a pair of stat building runs to make the final score 10-5.
Also worthy of mention the Mets bullpen, especially Takahashi, once again shined. He had 3 1/3 innings of 1 run, 5 strikeout relief. Jenrry Mejia
threw a scoreless 8th and Raul Valdes
allowed 1 run in the 9th to finish the game.UPDATE 12:50am - With the Phillies loss to the Giants, the Mets are now in 1st place in the NL East.Box score
