With John Maine having been placed on the disabled list due to fatigue in his shoulder, and with Met fans suffering the fatigue of their favorite team's tendency to find unique ways to lose games, Fernando Nieve was called on to take Maine's slot in the starting rotation. Not an ideal situation for a 26 year old who was in the minor leagues less than 2 weeks ago and had only made 1 relief appearance since being recalled to make his first major league start since June 2006. But Nieve (1-0) threw 108 pitches over 6 2/3 innings, allowing only 2 runs, cleaning the stench of defeat from the Mets and restoring, at least for one day, the faith of their fans as the New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees 6-2.It was a good afternoon to be named Fernando. Along with Nieve, Fernando Martinez (3 for 4) and Fernando Tatis (2 runs scored, 1 RBI) formed the first trio of Fernandos to ever be in one major league teams' starting lineup in history. People with other names contributed as well. Omir Santos drove in 3 runs with a double and a homer (4), and Gary Sheffield also homered (7).Santos started the scoring for the Mets with a 2-run homer in the 2nd inning and the Mets never trailed. Alex Rodriguez hit a solo homer (9) in the bottom of that inning to cut the lead in half, but in the top of the 5th the Mets scored 3 runs to give Nieve some breathing room. Sheffield singled to drive in Carlos Beltran, Tatis just beat out a double play attempt for a fielder's choice RBI and then Santos doubled in Tatis. All of that scoring came at the expense of Yankee starter Andy Pettitte who surrendered 5 runs on 12 hits in 5 innings of work. Sheffield's solo homer off Alfredo Aceves in the 7th was the Mets' final run. Derek Jeter singled in Melky Cabrera in the bottom of the 7th for the Yankees final run.So at least for one day the Mets and their fans can feel restored. The Mets go for the series victory in the rubber game Sunday afternoon when Johan Santana (8-3, 2.39) takes the mound for the Mets opposing A. J. Burnett (4-3, 4.89).Box score courtesy yahoo.comNY MetsABRHRBIHRBBKSBLOBSeason AvgL. Castillo 2b502000001.281A. Cora ss501000104.271C. Beltran cf512000000.344D. Wright 3b512000003.365G.
