The Mets had the 7th pick in the Rule 5 draft today and have selected Carlos Monasterios.   Carlos is a 23 year old A ball (moved up to AA at end of season) pitcher who had a 3.73 ERA and a WHIP of 1.209.   He has decent K rates striking out 75 in 89 innings.Monasterios was orignially signed by the Yankees in 2004 as a non drafted FA.   He was traded to the Phillies as part of the Abreu, Lidle trade. As most of you know the Mets would have to keep him on the 25 man all season long (baring injury) or would have to offer him back to the Phillies.   Basically it cost the Mets 50,000 to try him out for a spot.   A little puzzled on this one so I guess I will have to trust the scouts.Update: Carlos Monasterios is currently pitching for Bravos de Margarita in winter league. He has a3.51 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 39 K's and a .243 BAA in 51 innings.   48 innings came in 9 starts and he has made one relief appearance.   Not sure if this clears up anything or not.Update: 9:55am Mets have also selected John Lujan a AAA reliever with the White Sox.   I believe this was in the AAA phase.Update 10:02am According to several tweets, Mets have traded Monasterios to the Dodgers for cash consideration
