I have to give credit where credit is due, and the Mets for the first time in a while hit a grand slam yesterday. First came the announcement that the first class of the Mets Hall Of Fame since 2002 would include General Manager and architect of the '86 team, Frank Cashen. Much maligned in his day star outfielder, Darryl Strawberry, Pitching Phenom whose flame flickered out before he could truly become an all time great, Dwight " Doc" Gooden. And the skipper of what was possible the the best and most consistent Mets teams of all times , Davey Johnson. I just hope with this class of Hall of Famers that there will be a thaw out between the Mets and Davey Johnson, because you can draw the parallels between Davey with the Mets and most recently Joe Torre withthe Yankees, both managers took mediocre teams and turned them into champions - and when they were forced to leave, they turned into pariahs with their respective organizations.one of the other things that I was happy to see was that the Mets were able to avoid arbitration withboth Jeff " Frenchie" Francoeur and Pedro Feliciano. Both men have proven to be valuable assets to the team, and it was good to see that the signed them to reasonable contracts.I have to admit that I am kind of ambivalent to the news of Bengie Molina re-signing with the San Francisco Giants. I felt that his bat and his reputation for handling pitching staffs would help us greatly, but ultimately I don't think he would have been a great fit for the contract that he was demanding. So kudos to you Omar Minaya for not blinking in this stare down between you and "El Gordo", and please !! please don't touch Carlos Delgado with a hundred foot pole !! He will only end up on the disabled list by April 30th !!But all in all, if you are a Mets fan , it was a day that you ddin't want to stick your head in a oven . And lets face it there haven't been many days recently that we haven't contemplated that.                                                                                                                                                                                           ... Bengie Molina to both New                                                                           " You won't be seeing "El Gordito " on line at the Shake Shack anytime soon !"And with that said ... ON WITH THE INFAMY !!!Happy Birthday wishes go out to former mets catcher Jesse Gonder (1936) .Sadly on this date in '00, pitcher Ron Herbel passed away.On this day in '07 , ex pitching coach during the Art Howe era, Vern Ruhle passed away.New York Mets signed free agent Karim Garcia of the New York Yankees on January 20, 2004. This to me ranks up there as one of the most infamoussignings ever !! Karim along with his fellow ex Yankee teammate Shane Spencer were brought in to platoon in the outfield, but the were more interested in getting into brawls at Port St Lucie pizzerias that playing for the Mets.New York Mets signed free agent reliever José Parra on January 20, 2004.New York Mets signed free agent middle reliever Tom Martin on January 20, 2009.New York Mets signed free agent outfielder Cory Sullivan of the Colorado Rockies on January 20, 2009. I find it funny that Sullivan being one of the better reserve bats and gloves didn't get alot of playing time after the injury bug hit last season, he proved to have good defensive skills, and he had gotten key hits when he played. And lest we forget , there are just 75 days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.
