Well I guess there was one ray of sunshine in yesterdays dark and cloudy day. Johan Santana threw of the mound for the first time since having surgery last August . Otherwise I wouldn't say that yesterday by any stretch of the imagination was what you would call a " Banner Day" ( no pun intended) . Would I have given Sheets the contract that the A's signed him to ? The answer is no. No pitcher who hasn't pitched in over a year deserves that kind of money, but it just goes to show how desperate teams are to get quality pitching. Should the Mets have signed Jon Garland ? He was far from the top of my list but he would have been suffice as a guy who would of given this team at-least 12 wins and 200 plus innings - essentially giving our over taxed bullpen some much needed relief. But from what I have been reading the Mets didn't even offer him a contract. So for me there is a question to be asked - What gives ?!? Is Omar truly that confident in our starting rotation? Is there a trade in the works that we haven't seen yet? I know that The front office blamed last season in injuries but you know last season is last season, and we can wish and hope extremely hard that everyone comes back healthy and has banner years. But as the old saying goes " If if''s and buts were candy and Nuts , everyday would be Christmas." Don't get me wrong, if this is the team we are going to war with I will still support and root for the team - but honestly the way that this team is currently constructed - I am fearing the worst.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             " Any Christmas presents left in the bag for us Mets fans Omar?"And now ..... ON WITH THE INFAMY !!!!Happy Birthday wishes go out to one of the many reliever from the '67 team, Nick Willhite (1941) .Shortstop from last season ,Angel Berroa is thirty (1980) . All I can say is when you have Angel Berroa as your best shortstop option when your everyday guy is hurt - You know your team is in trouble !.Sadly on this date in 2007 , former General Manager from the '67 team - Bing Devine passed away.Atlanta Braves signed pitcher Pete Falcone of the New York Mets as a free agent on January 27, 1983. Pete was probably most famous (other than being one of the worst pitchers from the Mets lean era of the late '70's - early '80's) for being former Mets coach - Joe Pignatano's cousin.New York Mets signed free agent Dick Tidrow of the Chicago White Sox on January 27, 1984. Dick was at the end of his career , and he totally stunk up the joint with the Mets having no record in eleven games , posting a E.R.A of 9.19. He was released in early May that season.New York Mets signed free agent Dan Wheeler of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on January 27, 2003. Wheeler has gone on to become one of the better middle relievers in the game. And as you spend your day on you computer discovering what other potential Mets targets that have signed elsewhere, Don't forget that there are just 68 days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.
