Wladlaell there is just a little bit more than a monthto go before pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report at Tradition Field in Port Saint Lonesome Florida and I have to admit that I am getting psyched up for the upcoming season. But with that being said , there are still some glaring holes that Omar needs to address.I think that it is a forgone conclusion that love it or hate it, Bengie Molina will be our main catcher this season. But we do need an extra reserve infielder / outfielder for our bench, and I suggest giving a spring training invite to none other than Endy Chavez. Endy is currently a free agent after not re-signing with the Mariners after the end of this past season. He , when healthy is the best defensive replacement outfielder out there , he has loads of speed ( pinch running duties), and he has shown to be a more than capable pinch hitter. Another hole is at first base. I feel if Carlos Delgado shows that he less range at first base than Janet Reno, we should look elsewhere. And I think a suitablepartner in platoon withDaniel Murphy would be Aubrey Huff or Chris Carter. Huff has shown to be a hitter with above average power, and he has experience at first base. Carter , like Murphy is a first basemanby default since he from most reports is a butcher in the outfield. I believe the bullpen is pretty much set and we might be able to get away with the starting rotation we have now, but barring a trade for the likes of Bronson Arroyo, Aaron Harrang or Gil Mesch, we will more than likely end up with either Joel Pinero or Jon Garland which neither awes me nor does it sicken me.                                                                                                                                               ... make the catch but he also                                                                                                                                              Bring Back Endy !!"And with that said - HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!Happy Birthday wishes go out to original Mets outfielder John DeMerit (1936).Mets coach from the '79- '81 Mets ( and well respected major league manager) Chuck Cottier is 74 (1936).One of my least favorite Mets outfielders - Mike Cameron is 37 (1973) . I don't know why I don't like him, maybe because we could of had Vladamir Guerrero instead !Today would have been pitcher, Geremi Gonzalez 35th birthday (1975) . He was tragically killed by a lightening strike in his home country of Venezuela in 2008Happy Birthday wishes go out to our best right fielder since Shawn Green ( kidding ) Jeff " Frenchie" !! Francoeur (1984)Sadly on this date in 1989,coach for the '64 and '65 Mets team , Don Heffner .Today also marks the passing of former Mets coach,Harvey Haddix (1994)New York Mets traded pitcher, Ray Searage to the Cleveland Indians for utility infielder ( and one of my all time favorite scrubs ) Tom Veryzer on January 8, 1982.New York Mets signed free agent utility infielder, Tim Spehr of the Atlanta Braves on January 8, 1998.New York Mets released pitcher Joe Crawford on January 8, 1998.New York Mets signed free agent reliever Dae-Sung Koo on January 8, 2005. He comes from a long line of mediocre Japanese players that pitched for the Mets, at least he helped us beat the Yanks in a subway series game !!!And while you are entrenched under a bevy of blankets - don't forget that there are just 87 more days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.
