Okay so I know everyone in the TRDMB universe is wondering " Whats Rustyjr's take on the Brian Stokes for Gary Matthews Jr trade that went down earlier today?" "Is he pleased with it? Is he ready to stick his head into an oven? " The truth is I am somewhere in the middle. The best way I can describe it when I was a teenager my father and step mother made a big to do about my birthday . I really wanted a new B.C. Rich mockingbird bass , and all the hype was building my hopes up. I didn't get the bass , I ended up getting a remote control car. You see when Matt Cerrone from Mets Blog teased that there would be a major move today and it might be a multi team deal I was very excited . But when the smoke cleared and all we got was a past his prime former Met ( yes he had a very brief stint with us in the early "00's
) for a decent middle reliever I was extremely disappointed and frustrated with the deal that Omar had pulled the trigger on. I was hoping against hope that Luis Castillio would be part of the deal, but unfortunately he wasn't. Who knows maybe Matthews can find lightening in a bottle ( or PED's from a syringe
) and be that off the bench threat once Beltran comes back. But for now I see him as a platoon partner for Angel Pagan and temporary road block for Fernando Martinez. " Why do I feel the jokes on us?"
With that said - HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Happy Birthday wishes go out the backup outfielder from the '98 season , Wayne Kirby (1964).Unfortunately on this date in 2001 all time Mets great Tommie Agee passed away. Although I wasn't alive to see him play during his heyday, I had the honor of meeting him on a number of occasions. He was one of the nicest men I have ever met, and he is missed.
New York Mets traded outfield prospect Mark Carreon and pitcher Tony Castillo to the Detroit Tigers for pitcher Paul Gibson and Randy Marshall on January 22, 1992.New York Mets traded Yudith Ozario, Erik Hiljus and Eric Ludwick to the St. Louis Cardinals for Bernard Gilkey on January 22, 1996. This trade was a steal for the Mets. Gilkey had a career year that season. Too bad he flamed out , never coming close to putting up 30 homers and over a hundred R.B.I's ever again.
New York Mets signed free agent Alex Cora of the Boston Red Sox on January 22, 2009. He will always be known as the Mets most expensive reserve infielder/ cheerleader. And don't forget while you are banging your head against the wall and contemplating burning an effigy of Omar, just remember there are only more 73 days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.
