Mets Links: A-Rod the Mets Fan

Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York writes a column today about how a 13 year-old Alex Rodriguez, now the Yankees’ third baseman, idolized none other than Keith Hernandez when Mex was a Met. Of course, A-Rod almost became a Met prior to the 2001 season, but he and agent Scott Boras scared then-GM Steve Phillips …

An Open Apology to R.A. Dickey

I recently went through some posts on my old blog,”Mets Fan in Texas/Rocky Mountain Mets” (depended on where I lived at the time), and I came across a post that kind of suprised me.  I wrote it following a disastrous series against the Seattle Mariners at Shea in 2008.  You know the one – Felix …

Post Game: Mets Hold Off Rays, Finish Sweep

The Mets survived a ninth-inning scare and outslugged the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 9-6 (Box Score), completing a 3-game sweep of the AL East powerhouse in St. Pete. With an 8-4 lead, Bobby Parnell pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, and Tim Byrdak followed with a perfect eighth.  The Mets went ahead, 9-4, on an Ike Davis RBI …

Post Game: Yanks Finish off Sweep of Mets

Bad defense and a lack of timely hitting doomed the Mets to a 5-4 walk-off loss to the Yankees (BoxScore).  The Yankees completed their 3-game sweep of the punchless Mets in the Bronx.  The Mets have now lost 6 of their last 7, and are now looking more like the last-place team everyone thought they would …

An Ode to R.A. Dickey

R.A. Dickey has been pitching so well, he’s been worthy of all kinds of unqualified praise.  So much so, that he inspired me to write a poem…an ode…an Ode to R.A. Dickey: Robert Allen Dickey is your given name But as R.A., you rose to fame   As a youth, you invited a fight But …

First Place

It’s June 4, 2012, and the Mets are tied for first place. Before the season, Sports Illustrated predicted the Mets would win 75 games.  That’s what most of us Mets fans figured they’d win.  Michael Kay, the Yankees play-by-play man and WFAN ESPN Radio blowhard reckoned the Mets would win 50 games this year. Well, here …

Johan Santana – The Chosen One

50 years.  8,019 games.  No no-hitters. Until tonight. Johan Santana and his rebuilt shoulder threw 134 pitches.  Terry Collins had made it clear that Santana’s limit was 110 pitches, maybe 115.  But when you are the New York Mets.  And you’ve never thrown a no-hitter in 50 years.  And you have a no-hitter in progress …

It’s Hard to Not Get Excited about Wheeler

I try not to get too excited about prospects, especially those playing below AAA, but I’m having trouble suppressing my giddiness over Zack Wheeler. Wheeler reeled off 7 innings of 3-hit ball last night against Reading, walking none and striking out 8.  He threw an efficient 90 pitches, 68 of them for strikes. This season for the AA Binghamton …

Rusty Staub Talks to Bloggers

In honor of his bobblehead day on May 26th, the Mets Media Relations department was kind enough to hold a conference call between the great Rusty Staub and several Mets bloggers.  Rusty was very nice and accomodating.  A range of subjects was covered, from his career, to today’s players, to grilling tips. Here’s a sampling: …
