gibbsreport: They don't just use Park in games that are out-of-reach They have used him in close games throughout the entire season. He's the one who MAKES them blowout losses. In that 6-1 Yankee loss on Friday, they brought in Park in extra innings because David Robertson wasn't used to pitching more than 1 inning. At that time, it was only 2-1. Park is the one who blew the game open in that 6-1 loss, even though the official ruling gave the Loss to Robertson. And that's only one example. I know that he only has 1 loss and 2 blown saves, but he is responsible for way more losses. If you watch every Yankee game like I do, you would see how truly awful he is.
In the AL East, every game does count. The Yankees can't afford to waste games by using Chan Ho Park. In your first response, you said Park was a starter who the Yankees put into the bullpen. But that's wrong. Last year he was a starter with the Phillies, and then THEY put him into the bullpen. And that is where he shined. In the World Series, the Yankees faced Park. He pitched 3.1 scoreless innings against them. When the Yankees acquired Park, they thought they were getting THAT pitcher. They didn't intend on him mopping up. In the first game of the season this year, they used Park in a close situation and he blew it. And he kept doing that until finally he was demoted to Long Man.
I really don't know what your argument is. Where are your facts?
Park was signed to a contract worth 1.2 million dollars. In the Yankee bullpen, that contract is 3rd highest behind Damaso Marte and obviously Rivera. When you have arms that could pitch to the ERA he is pitching to sitting in Triple A, you don't go and spend that type of money on a "mop up guy". The guys who fill out the back end of the bullpen are generally guys who aren't thought highly of and certainly aren't compensated well. Park was brought in to solidify the front end with Joba, Robertson and Marte. Because Girardi is not one to overwork his relievers, the thought was to be able to use any combination of those 4 to pitch the 7th and 8th innings in any close game. Park has not been that pitcher this year. Perhaps last year with Philly was a revelation (a reason I don't support one year wonder signings), but this is something GMs must be careful of. Luckily, the contract isn't larger, but at this point, Park has not proven to be a successful signing, and his lack of dominance has left the Yankees reason to be in the market for another reliever come trade deadline.
That's what I'm saying :) Haha, I'm not a fan of "one year wonder" signings either. But I NEVER expected Park to be this atrocious. I can't believe how fast this season is flying - the trade deadline is right around the corner! Do you have any specific reliever in mind you would like the Yankees to acquire before the deadline?
1.2 million is nothing to the Yankees. You don't waste a young starter as a mop up guy which is what Chan Ho Park is. They hope that maybe he would pay off and he would be a successful reliever.
I don't care if they are the Yankees - no one wants to waste money. And sure, Park isn't the most expensive signing they ever made, but he hasn't, and won't pay off. That 1.2 million is enough for a quailty player. I never said to use a young starter in Park's place. Either a rookie reliever, or someone like Boone Logan who just happens to be in the Minor Leagues. Park wasn't supposed to be mop-up. He was supposed to be good, but sadly he has been demoted to mop-up. The young guy they would use in Park's place wouldn't be mop-up.The mop-up guy of the Yankees is Chad Gaudin. That's what they got him for. And they thought, since he was so good with them last year, that he would succeed with them again. You don't need 2 mop-up men, because they come in and take one for the team and just pitch, pitch, pitch, no matter what the results, just to save the rest of the bullpen.
Chan Ho, pleeeease get out of my Park!
Okay that wasn't funny....:P
Actually, Gaudin was cut before the season, went to Oakland, was cut from them, and when Mitre (who IS our mop up guy) and Aceves (who would have a big role in the bullpen) both went down with injury, Gaudin was brought back. He hasn't exactly impressed, and will probably be gone once those 2 return.
Gibbs, you can't keep trying to sell Park as a mop up guy. They signed him to have a larger role and he has been relegated to a lesser role due to poor performance. Trust me, if they knew he'd be his bad, they wouldn't have signed him. In the minors, they have Mark Melancon, who came up at times last year and put up better numbers than Park's currently. Park was a guy with a revived career (so they thought) As a reliever with Philly, so they took a shot. It hasn't worked out, but luckily, it's only a one year deal.
For the Yankees bullpen, if we are talking about a 7 deep pen, by postseason you should have Mariana, Joba, Robertson, Marte, Aceves, Mitre, and ___________. My personal preference would be to go out and get another lefthander (I'm not a fan of Boone Logan for a postseason roster), and if we can get someone who is an upgrade over Logan that can get out lefties, I'd be all for that move. Obtaining someone of that nature would probably lead the Yanks to DFA Park, ending a failed tenure in New York. Perhaps the lesson would be learned that one year wonders should not be given a chance at starring roles (yes I said STARRING ROLES) on the Yankees, even if it is key relievers to set up Mo.
Virginia, you wanted a name for a reliever so I will give you one: Will Ohman. Left handed reliever on Baltimore who was just named their closer. Solid against lefties and if he's closing, will have to get out righties as well. It would help us matchup better, and he carries a 2.84 ERA this year in 42 appearances, many of which were against AL East opponents. He's a guy I wouldn't mind having.
Chan Ho Park... SUCKS PERIOD!
