If you say we are as deep as we are then why is losing Randy Moss such a big deal? He hasn't brought us a SB. The Pats were at their best when they had scrappy WR's who didn't care about numbers anyway. Moss was disgruntled and asking for a trade, he was having problems with the WR coach. The situation was beginning to escalate and he was going to walk at the end of the season. Dumping him now and getting a pick in return is the right move. Not only does it help us in the future, the Pats have shown that they don't need a go-to WR to be successful. It makes sense.
I can't agree with you. The mere presence of Randy Moss on the field almost immediately draws double coverage, and when it doesn't, he burns his man more times than not. The fact of the matter is that Welker, Hernandez, Gronkowski, Edelman, and Tate can be stopped at the line. They don't have the experience or the field presence that Moss had. Sure, they're young, but having youth also often means having inexperience, and Moss provides a great supplement experience-wise.
You continue to not understand my main arguement. I AM NOT saying trading Randy Moss makes the Patriots a better team at this very moment. Of course, it doesnt. How can trading a great receiver for a draft pick make you better at the moment when you do not get any immediate return?
The point is that the Patriots were not going to win the Super Bowl with Randy Moss this year and he was going to leave after this season anyway. At least by trading him now the Patriots 1) Get something in return and 2) Can develop their young talent further by giving them bigger roles this year.
This trade was not made to help them win this year. It was to help the organization overall (in this instance it was for the future).
